‘IRIS FBR’ is an online portal for filing income tax returns. The word “filer” makes it sound like being a filer is something incredibly difficult, but becoming a filer is actually very easy. You can become a filer without needing a lawyer or any hassle.
Don’t you believe it? Then read this guide below, where you can learn how to become a filer.
Steps to Become a Filer and Active Taxpayer
1. Visit the Official Website:
First, you’ll visit the official website of the IRIS (https://iris.fbr.gov.pk/). Under the login option, you’ll see the “New Registration” option. Click on it, and you’ll be asked to enter some basic information.
2. Enter Basic Information:
• Prefix: Choose “Mr.” or “Mrs.”
• Name: Enter your first name, middle name, and last name.
• Current Service Provider: Select your mobile network and provide your mobile number and email address.
• Address & Property: Enter your address details and declare any property under your name. If you only own a house, choose “residential property.” If you have additional property like land, specify the type and its measurements (in marlas or kanals).
3. Complete Registration:
After entering the above information, input the captcha code, and a verification code will be sent to both your email and phone via SMS. Use this code to verify your identity.
4. Login Details:
You’ll receive a password and registration ID via email and SMS. Log in to your account with your CNIC as your ID number and the password provided.
5. Filing for NTN (National Tax Number):
Filing is incomplete without an NTN. Open a browser and search for the challan generation website. On this page, select “e-payment,” then choose “Income Tax” for the relevant tax year (e.g., 2023 or 2024). Convert the NTN to CNIC and fill in the details. The system will auto-populate your information.
6. Generate a Challan:
Under “Tax Payment Nature,” choose the appropriate option and generate a challan by entering Rs. 1000 as the late surcharge. You can pay via Bank, EasyPaisa or JazzCash.
7. Filing Income Tax Return:
• Log into IRIS using your CNIC and password.
• Select the Declaration option and choose “Normal Return” from the available tabs.
• Select the relevant Tax Period (e.g., July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023).
• Enter your income details and check for any tax chargeable or adjustable.
• In the Wealth Statement, reconcile your assets, personal liabilities, and net assets. Then add your assets in Personal Assets/Liabilities and then make an un-reconciled amount as ‘0’ (zero).
• In the Attribute section, fill in your business sector details by clicking on the add (+) button available, and select your most relevant option in the Business sector.
8. Verification & Submission:
• Cross-check all data in the Data section.
• Verify and submit the return by entering the PIN received during registration.
9. Payment of Late Fee:
After filing the return, log out of the IRIS system and visit the e-FBR portal. Generate a challan for Rs. 1000 as the late fee surcharge. Make the payment.
10. Check Active Status:
After completing the above steps, check your filer status by visiting the Active Taxpayer List on the IRS/FBR website. Enter your CNIC to verify if you are listed as an active filer.
This guide is a step-by-step process, covering both registration and filing of income tax, ensuring that your filer status becomes active.
